I first got interested in OCR when I faced a project at my previous job involving OCR of outdoor scenes and found it to be a very complex task, yet highly rewarding because it's easy to make incremental progress and see your learners working.
Current state-of-the-art OCR tools are not at human level of reading, partially because humans are able to take context into account. For instance, sentence below is unreadable if you don't assume English language.

Also, I'm excited to work on an open-source project. I'd like to live in a world where the best technologies are open-source and free to everyone.

It's impressive how many really good NLP & ML people google hires, I hope you have a good time working there.
Hi, I see you are listed as the owner of #statistics on freenode. Would you mind forwarding people to ##statistics or least mentioning it in the topic of #statistics? The community is currently split between the two.
Nice blog, btw. I will have to start following it. Congrats on Google, too!
Anonymous: I've been out of IRC ever since I switched to Mac because there doesn't seem to have a free IRC client. Nowadays there's Java App for freenode but I don't remember ChanServ commands, if you email me instruction I'll login and add you as an op
Sorry to clutter your blog, but I couldn't find your email. If you just do something like "/topic Please join ##statistics.", that would be great. You could op me with "/op exherboer", but that shouldn't be needed.
Thanks!
Congratulations.
Congrats and good luck in your new job!
